EXPERIENCE: Online
Volunteer’s Intervention within 24 hours Deadline Results in 1,000
Schoolbags
The Austria-based Help
Afghan School Children Organization (HASCO) facilitates education for
Afghan schoolchildren. Five years ago, HASCO started engaging online
volunteers in its projects, and many continued their collaboration
beyond the first assignment.
Daniela
Werner, for example, is helping the organization reach out to the
German-speaking public and potential donors by translating project
proposals, reports and press releases from English to German.
Online
volunteering has enabled Daniela, who is a development worker in her
professional life, to continue her volunteer engagement with HASCO from
her various duty stations: For the past four years, HASCO has been
relying on the highly flexible and competent support which she provides
from any duty station, be it
Germany,
Bhutan
or elsewhere.
One
day, her instant reaction to an assignment within a 24-hour deadline
resulted in the donation of 1,000 schoolbags by the
Municipality
of
Vienna.
´I received the notice short after
midnight,
remembers Daniela. A few hours later, she submitted the reviewed and
translated proposal to HASCO.
Hafizullah
Khaled, the director and online volunteer coordinator at HASCO,
expresses his recognition: The constructive collaboration with our
online volunteers was a crucial success factor in the implementation of
our school rehabilitation and schoolbag projects, amongst others .
